Why bugs are so good to eat!

A huge part of our healing is due to the fact that we eat bugs…Yep, you read it correctly – bugs – the more the better!!!

What I am talking about is the precious microbes that reside in our gut. They are so, so important to good health. The more I learn about them, the more I am blown away at how amazing they are, and how much we need and depend on them. The kicker is that they are the GOOD bacteria…unfortunately thats not always the case.

In an earlier post I alluded to some of the processes that bacteria are responsible for in our bodies. Basically without them we’d be dead. They help digest food, make vitamins, make chemicals in our body to make our brain work. If that’s not enough they also help with immunity, among plenty of other things. To be honest we don’t really know that much about the microbial life in our gut. There is so much more to learn. If you are wondering how this can be true, think about this fact…

…in our body, there are around 75 trillion cells that make up our bones, muscle, skin etc. 75 trillion – give or take a few trillion! But – that accounts for only ten percent of the entire amount of living cells within us. The other 90% is bacterial microbes. Yes, thats right. Only 10% of whats in us is actually our own cells with our DNA. The majority is teeny tiny little bugs. We are basically a house for them. There is an entire eco-system living within us. Don’t let this freak you out, although it does blow my mind, but its an interesting fact.

So why is this all so important to know?

Well, there are so many factors in our lives that can alter which bacteria are in charge in our gut. Believe it or not there are nasties residing in even the healthiest of us. They also play a role. The problems occur when they get out of balance.

So what can throw off the natural balance?
  • medications, like antibiotics, the contraceptive pill, and panadol
  • stress
  • poor eating habits and patterns
  • environmental toxins
  • allergies and intolerances
  • poor lifestyle choices (which some might consider the ‘high life’!!)

How to get the balance right (and keep it that way?). Well, the east Europeans and Japanese, among others, got it right…by eating fermented foods. You are probably turning your nose up right now, if you are anything like I was 😕 . I know it just sounds gross, right? Sorry to tell you though, that this is the answer to correcting many health problems.

Here is a list of what we have incorporated into our diet on a daily basis:
Adding these into your diet has massive benefits. It turns your diet into living, nutritious, wholesome food. There are so many benefits. You should try it – just add one thing into your daily routine and see how you feel. I won’t go a day without them now.

This is a good write up on how fermented foods can act as an antidepressant…

Go eat some bugs!!
Yours in Vitality
